Family Health Hub, how we began

by FamilyHealthHub

Family Health Hub began one day when I was stuck at home with a broken foot. I think I was high on painkillers! But that was the day I decided to turn my dream into a reality. Was I crazy or was it a good idea?!

For most of my adult life my friends have been people who I met at university, who did science degrees like I did. It’s only in the last few years, since my two children started at primary school, that I have got to meet people from a more diverse range of backgrounds. Over these schooling years I have observed many parents go through the trials of having a sick child and not knowing what’s best to do. Or others with complex diagnoses needing to suddenly learn from scratch so that they can help their child.

With knowledge, we are empowered

In my career I have been a researcher in medical science for 20 years. I love looking up information to learn how the body works, what goes wrong when we get sick, and how we can help to fix it. As I grow older and wiser (!) I have realised how important it is to take a holistic approach to health. Rarely is there one problem with one medicine and no side effects. When one part of the body encounters a problem, there is often a knock-on effect to other parts. We need all this information at hand to help re-balance and get back to health. The human body is so complex. I want to help Mums get the information they need to look after themselves and their families the best that they can. I want to empower them with that knowledge.

Resources to make it easy for you

Family Health Hub had been formulating in my mind for over a year. I wanted to create a central hub of information that Mums can turn to for starting their learning journey. Easy-to-understand information to explain the basis of childhood issues their family might be experiencing. Access to experts, and links to quickly find more information. Learning from each other and benefiting from each other’s own experiences. A community of support. Recommended health care professionals, starting your journey with someone you know will be good because others have ‘been there, done that’ and found the best practitioners already.

A crazy dream becomes reality

Family Health Hub began one day when I was stuck at home, lying on the couch with a broken foot. I think I was high on painkillers! But that was the day I decided to turn my dream into a reality. Was I crazy or was it a good idea?! I’d had 7 weeks barely able to move around at home let alone get out of the house. And then another 7 weeks of the same, after having an operation on my foot. I found the whole process very difficult. Not knowing who I should see (GP? Emergency? Specialist? Physiotherapist?), whether my foot was healing properly, what medicines I should be taking, or what I should be doing at home (exercises? resting?). It was all was very confusing. Even to me, who has a lot of knowledge about the human body from two university degrees and a total of eight years of academic study in the area of health.

Here to help YOU

So I have created Family Health Hub for You. The Mum who has a sick child, who needs to know more about “Why?” and “What Can I Do?”. The Mum who has a child newly diagnosed, and needs to quickly learn all about the illness. The Mum who wants to make health a priority, for her and her family. The Mum who is exhausted and just doesn’t know where to start. Please, let me help you, I know I can.
